Answers to Some Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I am not receiving email from LLPOA (like the LLPOA eNewsletter). What's up?

A: There are three major reasons you might not be receiving the eNewsletter.

1. You might not be signed up for the LLPOA-eNews email list. Click here and fill out the form to subscribe.

2. Your Internet Service Provider (AOL for example) might be blocking all messages from llpoa. You usually don't have any control over this. The only good solution is to use a different email address for LLPOA-eNews. There are free email addresses available from Google (gmail), Yahoo, and others. You can usually set your email software up to automatically get mail sent to you at your gmail or other email address in addition to your regular email address.

3. You may be filtering your email through spamarrest or a similar service. You will need to authorize email that comes from llpoa-enews-bounces@lakelansing.org.

Q: Are there suggestions or "rules of etiquette" for using an email list?

A: Here are some suggestions that have come to be widely accepted in the "listserv" community:

  • Be sure your message is in keeping with the purpose of the list.
  • In the "Subject" line, use a concise but informative header.
  • Keep messages short and to the point.
  • Please send only meaningful messages. Messages like "Me, too" and "Cool" going out waste everyone's time - and their patience.
  • Avoid using all capital letters. This is the equivalent of SHOUTING (and considered rude). To emphasize a word or phrase, place asterisks around a word. For instance, * word *.
  • Sign your messages with your full name and e-mail address.
  • Check your e-mail regularly.
  • Don't be too impatient with messages you personally would not have sent out. We encourage you to just hit the delete key than have to censor messages.
  • Remember that whatever you send out is going to be public. Sending confidential information is not appropraite.
  • No "flaming". Flaming is the use of emotionally loaded content. It is fine to discuss controversial subjects, but personalizing the debate is not.
  • In the LLPOA email list system, hitting "reply" to a message from the LLPOA email list system will send your message to the individual who originated the message. Your reply is not going to go out to everyone. To send a message to everyone on the list, send it to the list's email address - for example, to llpoa-enews@lakelansing.com for the LLPOA-eNews list.
  • Avoid sending attachments. If you must, include the word "Attachment" in the Subject line.
  • Keep the length of your lines 70 characters or less. Longer lines can cause problems with some e-mail systems.
  • Selling or advertising products and personal services is considered rude and inappropriate. However, the LLPOA-eNews list is there to let everyone around the lake know if your home is for sale or rent, or to let people know about boats or other items of general interest that you want to sell or give away.

Q: How do I change my subscription options?

A: The easiest way is to sign on to your "account" for the email list you want to change options for. To do this, click on the eMail List (box on right) you want to change your subscription options for. In the "Changing Options, Password Reminder, Unsubscribing" section at the bottom of the page, enter your email address then click "Unsubscribe or edit options". On the next screen enter your password. If you forgot what your password is, click "Remind" in the "Password Reminder" section. A reminder will immediately be sent to you by email.

Q: I am receiving two copies of each LLPOA-eNews email. What's up - and can I change this?

A: The most likely reason you are getting two copies is because you are on the LLPOA-eNews email list twice with two different email addresses. If this is true, you can unsubscribe one of the email addresses (suggestion: choose the one that does not show up on your email "from" line).

An alternative is to sign on to your "account" for one of the email addresses and check the "Disabled" box in the "Mail Delivery" line - then click the "Submit my changes" button. Now one email address will be enabled and the other disabled. This means that you will only receive one email - but the LLPOA-eNews system will accept email from either of your addresses for broadcast purposes.

Q: I like receiving the LLPOA eNewsletter. Can I get just the eNewsletter but not everything else?

A: Yes. Sign on to your "account" on the LLPOA-eNews mailing list. Then, under "Your LLPOA-eNews Subscription Options", find the option titled "Which topic categories would you like to subscribe to?". Click in the box next to LLPOA-eNewsletter.
