Home Depot
Is now carrying some phosphorus free products

Here is a summary of what they say about fertilizer:

If you don't use fertilizer, don't start now. If you do...

Most lakeside lawns do not need phosphorus. Don't use fertilizer that contains phosphorus unless soil testing indicates a need for it.

Look for a fertilizer that contains no phosphorus. You can tell the amount of phosphorus by looking at the middle number on the label. For example, 20-0-10 will have no phosphorus.

The first number on a fertilizer label is for nitrogen. Make sure the nitrogen is a slow-release type, such as sulfur-coated urea or IBDU. Don't use more than 8 pounds of nitrogen for a quarter acre of lawn (about 100 by 100 feet).

You can reduce the nitrogen needs of your lawn by leaving the grass clippings when you mow. A mulching mower will help.
