Lake Lansing
Special Assessment District (SAD)
The Lake Lansing Watershed Management Special Assessment District (SAD) has been in existence since 1998. It provides funding to manage and improve the quality of Lake Lansing.
Prior to having the Special Assessment District, in the early 1990s LLPOA organized voluntary contributions for weed control and other lake management efforts. Then, realizing the importance of a broader lake management program, LLPOA was instrumental in the creation of the Special Assessment District.
A "Management Plan" and an advisory committee provide the basis for decisions made by the Meridian Township Board. An initial “Management Plan for Lake Lansing and its Watershed” was completed in 2002. That plan has been updated for 2007 - 2009. In turn, the Lake Lansing watershed is located in the Red Cedar River Watershed. The goals and program for the Lake Lansing Watershed support those established for the Red Cedar River Watershed.
Among other things, the Special Assessment District provides a basis for funding weed control in the lake and addressing other water quality issues. As a result of these efforts, the Lake condition is improving. Funding for the Special Assessment District comes from annual assessments against the approximately 267 parcels of those living on the lake (Tier 1) and those living in the next tier of approximately 313 parcels (Tier 2). In addition, Meridian Township, Ingham County, the Lansing Sailing Club and Michigan State University have contributed to the funding.
The SAD from 2003 thru 2007 provided $60,000 annually for lake quality and maintenance expenses.
A renewal of the SAD for a 10 year period (2008-2017) is in place provides for a total annual assessment of $80,000. Tier #1 has annual assessments of $150.82. Tier #2 has annual assessments of $75.41. The renewal includes an increase to cover costs of investigating and possibly utilizing biological treatment of weeds, and to address water quality in the several drains that flow into the lake.
