2002 Management Plan

The Lake Lansing Watershed Management Special Assessment District has been in existence since 1998. It provides funding to manage and improve the quality of Lake Lansing.

A "Management Plan" and an advisory committee provide the basis for decisions made by the Meridian Township Board. An initial “Management Plan for Lake Lansing and its Watershed” was completed in 2002. That plan has been updated for 2007 - 2009. In turn, the Lake Lansing watershed is located in the Red Cedar River Watershed. The goals and program for the Lake Lansing Watershed support those established for the Red Cedar River Watershed.

Among other things, the Special Assessment District provides a basis for funding weed control in the lake and addressing other water quality issues. As a result of these efforts, the Lake condition is improving. Funding for the Special Assessment District comes from annual assessments against the approximately 304 parcels of those living on the lake (Tier 1) and those living in the next tier of approximately 318 parcels (Tier 2). In addition, Meridian Township, Ingham County and Michigan State University have contributed to the funding.

The current SAD (2003-2007) provided $60,000 annually and expires at the end of this year. Renewal of the assessment is crucial to ensure the long term quality and maintenance of the lake.

The Lake Lansing Watershed Management Advisory Committee has recommended that the renewal be for a 10 year period (2008-2017), and that the total annual assessment be $80,000. In addition, it is recommended that the assessment include the remaining approximately 775 parcels in the Lake Lansing watershed by adding a Tier 3. The areas for Tiers 1 & 2 would remain unchanged. The approximate annual assessments per parcel beginning in 2008 would be $130, $65, and $32.50 respectively for Tiers 1, 2, & 3. These assessments would be slightly reduced if contributions from Meridian Township, Ingham County, and Michigan State University continue. The proposed increase is to cover the costs to investigate and possibly utilize biological treatment of weeds, and to address water quality in the several drains that flow into the lake from Tiers 1, 2, and 3.
